We are all so fortunate to live in a village that has so many beautiful historic listed buildings, including churches, cemetery chapels, a former grammar school, a hotel, houses, and a memorial lamp standard.
Audlem Parish Church is, without doubt, a massive visual and historic asset to the village -- and its Bells are a massive audible asset. Even a lifetime atheist such as myself doesn't hesitate to say that!
Whilst it would be normal for the actual owners of such buildings to fund their repairs, if there's a shortfall then I have no problem with the owners asking the community to help them out.
Under these circumstances it would be usual for the owners to tell us how much they are able to contribute and what the actual shortfall is.
Let's not forget that the Church of England is a huge private organisation with investments that include properties in villages, towns and cities across the country as well as more than 100,000 acres of land in England and Wales. This large property portfolio is only one third of the C of E's massive £8.7bn investment fund that generated a 10% Total Return in 2019!
Were their contribution actually stated, then I would suggest that many more people such as myself would be far more prepared to make a donation towards the preservation of this wonderful asset.
