Bellringers well on the way to achieve their target

As regular readers will be aware, we reported that during 2006, three of Audlem's campanologists would celebrate their 60th birthdays and to commemorate the occasion the bellringers have set themselves the difficult target of ringing 60 quarter peals during the year.

Just to remind you that although this may not sound a lot to us laymen, a quarter peal is a complex manoeuvre that takes approximately 40 minutes and involves 1,260 changes. Each change is a different permutation of the order in which the bells are rung.

We promised to keep you informed of the bellringers' progress throughout the year. Their target for the end of June is thirty. By the end of the weekend they expect that their total will be twenty two, so they are just behind target.

Speaking to Audlem Online, one of the bellringers, who celebrates a sixtieth birthday this year, is confident that they are well on target to reach their goal. Despite some of the recent comments posted on the Forum page, let's hope that they will achieve this tremendous feat. Keep your ears pealed!
