Battling through snow in the Highlands

South Cheshire has seen a fair bit of snow this year but nothing compared with the Scottish Highlands.

On Thursday and Friday last week, a young Audlem man was on Outdoor Survival training with the military in the far north of Scotland. After a prolonged snow storm, he had to battle with colleagues through snow that was, in some places up to chest height, for 19km – that's almost twelve miles – in wild and desolate terrain.

Their overnight shelter was the wonderfully named Magoo Bothy, photographed, which is well to the north west of Inverness. Leaving it, the military team battled through the deep snow to their transport, only to find that was snowed in.

There was no alternative to pressing on to a road that might still be open, and the possibility of finding overnight accommodation.

With true grit, they all made it safely and were put up overnight in a welcoming hotel.

The team were in the Highlands to improve survival skills and their fitness. Our correspondent on the expedition, who was safely back in Audlem yesterday, reckons they all passed with flying colours.
