A select band of AWEG (Audlem Wildlife & Ecology Group) members joined the first trip of the year on Tuesday to Shropshire, taking in Cole Mere, Wood Lane, which is a Shropshire Wildlife Trust site, and Ellesmere. On the return journey, the group added a short visit to the Burleydam lake which now attracts a wide range of bird species.

While nothing unusual was seen, highlights included a pair of Treecreepers seen very close by, considerable numbers of Great Crested Grebes, although none performing their amazing courtship routine, Widgeon, Pochard, Cormorants, Lapwing and the sound of woodpeckers hard at work in the woods.

At Ellesmere, the group saw the Heronry where, using the webcam in the Boathouse cafe, you can see the heron's eggs as they nest in the trees on a nearby island.

AWEG has a selection of visits organised over the coming Spring and Summer months and the group meets every other month with the next meeting scheduled for Tuesday 19th April.
