The Audlem Wildlife & Ecology Group (AWEG) met on Tuesday evening at The Lord Combermere.
Local resident John Vickers gave an informal talk on his experience as a volunteer at Conwy RSBP reserve, describing how the site came about – it was created using the mud excavated during the creation of the A55 tunnel that lies on the bed of the Conwy River.
The meeting also agreed a series of wildlife visits over the coming months that will include Colmere and Wood Lane ponds near Ellesmere shortly; a trip to to the Wildlife & Wetlands Trust site at Martinmere in Lancashire; visits to Whixhall Moss and to Jackson's Coppice near Eccleshall on two dates in May and to Llannymynech near Oswestry in June.
Later in the year, there will be trips to Little Budworth Common and to Red Rocks at Hoylake on the Wirral.
The meeting heard of the spectacular success of barn owl breeding in Cheshire last year with 685 young. This compared with just 17 in 1998. The full Cheshire Barn Owl Report appeared on AudlemOnline on Tuesday.
