Twenty three wildlife enthusiasts enjoyed a fascinating talk by marine biology student Emma Jefferys at an AWEG (Audlem Wildlife & Ecology Group) social gathering yesterday afternoon.

Emma, the granddaughter of Audlem residents Brian and Anne Bowles, is a student at the world famous National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton.

Her parents, David and Karen, were also at the talk which focussed on her experiences with study visits and extensive work on projects on Malta, Svalbard – a group of Norwegian islands in the Arctic – in Sweden and on the Scilly Islands.

She returns to University later this month for her final year of study and will be involved in a project with the British Antarctic Expedition.

She described her work with sharks, polar bears, lobsters and crawfish and much else, including sailing out with fishermen as she and others tagged the shellfish that were too small to be commercially landed.

Despite it being her first ever talk to such an audience, Emma spoke with authority, humour and thoroughly entertained as well as informed her audience who learnt much about parts of the world such as Svalbard which are rarely visited.

There were many questions and all agreed it had been a fascinating afternoon.

The next AWEG meeting is at The Lord Combermere on Monday 21st September starting at 7.30pm.
