For those wondering if it will ever stop raining this month, the somewhat surprising news is that August is statistically the wettest month of the year locally.

August sees more rainfall than any other month in a number of British regions, including the Lancashire/Cheshire plain and southwards into Shropshire, the area which has Audlem right in its centre. So says the weather expert Philip Eden in one of the Sunday newspapers, who has analysed weather patterns over the years.

The main reason, he says, is that the seas around Britain are now warm and air masses arriving are more humid than any other time of the year. Meteorologists' jargon says that 'Potential Precipitable Moisture' is greatest in August, hence the likelihood of prolonged heavy downpours.

So, dry and sunny Augusts are abnormal, it would seem. Perhaps the only crumb of comfort is that if this is the wettest month, it should get a bit drier in a couple of weeks time!
