Crowds enjoy a warm weekend at Audlem's Gathering of Historic Boats

The annual Gathering of Historic Boats returned to Audlem Wharf on the Shropshire Union Canal from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th July 2025, drawing in several hundred visitors for a lively and memorable weekend.

Organised by the Historic Narrow Boat Clubhttps://hnbc.org.uk/, the event celebrated the rich heritage of the UK s canal network. Founded in 1966, the club is a not-for-profit organisation passionate about preserving historic working boats and the stories of the waterways they travelled.

This year s free event featured 30 beautifully preserved historic narrow boats, originally built between the 1850s and early 1960s. These boats once played a vital role in transporting goods across the country before the rise of the railways. With their distinctive 7-foot width and 70-foot length, these vessels could carry up to 25 tons of cargo first drawn by horses or mules, and later powered by steam and diesel engines.

Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, a vintage steam traction engine was on display outside The Shroppie Fly pub, where guests enjoyed refreshments and the buzz of the crowd.

Visitors were also treated to a look at the newly refurbished Welcome to Audlem sign, now proudly displayed on the canal bank opposite The Shroppie Fly. The restoration was carried out by ADAS (Audlem District Amenities Society) in collaboration with the Canal & River Trust and dedicated volunteers.

Throughout the weekend, the volunteer-run Audlem Lass boat service offered relaxing canal rides between Audlem s Lock 15 and Overwater Marina, raising funds for the RNLI and giving visitors a memorable cruise along this historic waterway.

The weekend wrapped up in style on Sunday with the popular Audlem Festival of Transport, featuring an impressive vehicle parade and display on the nearby Audlem Playing Field just a short stroll from the Wharf.

With warm weather and plenty to see and do, this year's Gathering was a great success, offering a wonderful mix of history, community spirit, and summer fun.
