Audlemís road issue hits the press

The issue of long-distance Heavy Goods Vehicles driving through Audlem and blocking the narrow roads has hit the local press again. Last night's Sentinel carried it as their front page lead story while today's Chronicle also covers the problem

The Audlem Parish Plan featured this as the main issue for local residents. Indeed, it was also the key issue in a Village Plan as long ago as 1976. A submission to have the A525 de-primed as a way of reducing the number of HGVs, many routed here by their Satnav systems, is with local MP Stephen O'Brien and he has said he will do all he can to help. It is hoped he will meet with the Minister of Transport soon when Parliament returns from its summer break.

The media coverage this week follows the Audlem Online story over the weekend about how, in Somerset, county council planners are to ask the makers of vehicle-based satellite navigation systems to stop sending heavy traffic through rural villages. An increase in lorry traffic clogging roads in Wedmore, Somerset, led villagers there to call for it to be "wiped off" the sat nav map. Somerset County Council said it would now be drawing up a series of preferred routes for sat nav systems and the authority said there are "more appropriate" routes for heavy lorries.

The same arguments apply to Audlem and perhaps the Transport Minister and Cheshire County Council could act just as Somerset County Council has done.
