Well known Audlem resident and former Land Army member Nora Bate has been present at several important events at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire, although it has a Derby postcode, DE13 7AR, in case anyone wishes to visit.

She must be one of the youngest because she worked in the Girls' hostels before she was old enough to become a member herself at 17.

At the unveiling of the memorial to the Bevin boys two years ago she was the only representative of the Women's Land Army in the parade.

In June 2014 she marched in a Veterans' Parade and was congratulated by the Mayor of Stafford in full regalia, so she had her photo taken with him! (see bottom right photo)

There are thought to be about 16,000 Land Army girls still living but only 400 were invited on Tuesday of this week – not a day to be out in – to see the unveiling of the new memorial to the Land Army and Timber Corps Girls. (bottom left photo)

Unfortunately the weather and the delays were a trial especially for the old ladies in wheelchairs but they and Nora put a brave face on it.

The Countess of Wessex did the honours and spoke to many in the tea tents afterwards and there was a very friendly atmosphere.

Nora was interviewed for a DVD called 'WLA (Women's Land Army) Tribute' which will soon be produced and sold for £10. She already features on the DVD produced in 2006 called 'Dig for
Victory' a copy of which is in possession of the History Society.

Struggling against 70mph winds she made it back to the car where she had had the foresight to pack hot coffee and cake! It will be a lasting memory of the recognition of all the hard work put in by these ladies during both World Wars.
