Audlem man answers call for Super-Hero

(The website link that was here no longer works) When a charity called for a volunteer to don the costume of a super hero at Crewe Alex last Saturday, Audlem's Colin Seddon quickly responded.

The Railway Children, based in Scope House, Weston Road, Crewe raises money to help street children around the world. In order to give publicity to a special fund raising day to be held on May 12th, Crewe Alex players and officials agreed to help. The WHY Day campaign aims to ask the question "Why are there 120 million homeless children?"

What better way to publicise Why Day than to have Captain Why parading around Gresty Road before the match against Coventry City, all togged up in his super hero costume – complete with Y fronts! And here he is captured by the Crewe Alex photographer as he meets up with the club mascot, Gresty.

Unfortunately Pete Kent, the Railway Children's Programme Development Officer, who was to squeeze into the tight fitting lycra costume, had to fly to Mumbai on Tuesday and, with less than four days to go before the match, the hunt was on for a new Captain Why. An appeal was placed in last Wednesday's Chronicle asking for a "kind hearted volunteer".

In true super hero style, step forward Colin who agreed to undertake the mission only on the condition that his parents, Geoff and Pam who were going to the match, remained in the dark. And they did – until they looked down at the pitch before the match started and saw someone who looked suspiciously familiar in spite of his disguise. Could it be ...? No, surely not. But it was!

As a big thank you, the Alex players signed his Y fronts and Colin has vowed never to wash them. He was also rewarded with a case of Stella. There is no truth in the malicious rumour that this was the real reason for donning the costume or that he has a penchant for lycra costumes.
