Audlem's extended wait for their North Staffs and South Cheshire League debut proved to be worth it as they made a winning start -- and in some style.

Audlem, who moved across from the Cheshire League set-up in the close season had seen the coronavirus pandemic delay their bow in the NSSCL and then the weather intervened the previous weekend once recreational cricket was given the green light to start -- as rain prevented any play in the opener at Crewe Vagrants.

However they made up for lost time with a resounding victory over Stafford CC on Saturday. Captain and opening batsman, Chris Shenton grabbed the headlines and made a little slice of history as his 112 was Audlem's first century in their new surroundings. ( It was also the highest individual score in the NSSCL on the day )

His exploits, allied to 42 not out from Dan Butler enabled Audlem to rack up an eye watering 231 for 9 from their 40 overs. Rob Walters (4-33) & Phillip Stacey (3_38) attempted to stem the flow of runs.

The baton was then passed to bowlers Qhama Matthews (3-10) & Simon Swift (3-16) as they joined forces to skittle Stafford for 91 in reply. Trevor Stuart (24) & Rob Walters (22) batted gamely but it was nowhere near enough.

It was a different story the following day as the Sunday X1 fell to their first defeat of the season at the hands of Poppyfields CC from The West Midlands by the margin of 7 wickets.

Audlem again won the toss and decided to stick with the tactic of batting first which had served them well on their two previous outings this season. Slow progress was made from the early order batsmen with only Andy Burton (38) finding the measure of the opposition attack. Again wicket keeper/ batsman, Dave Parkinson (61) came to the rescue and this time managed to get past the half century barrier after falling for 49 last time out. He was supported by good middle order knocks from Paddy Leese (17), Paul Thorburn (16) & Nick Hancock (16) which enabled the home team to set a respectable 177 for 9 at the close of their innings.

The opposition batsmen were soon into their stride on the resumption, encouraged by a large away following scoring at a brisk rate to rack up a 50 partnership for the first wicket then with another two quick dismissals Audlem were back in the game at 60 for 3 in the 16th over. That was as good as it got for the home team though as opening batsman T. Guilder (63 no) & J. Brotherston (50 no) safely guided their team home to a well deserved victory with 4 overs to spare

The pick of the Audlem bowling attack were Tanin Ahmed ( Tas) who bowled his 8 overs for 25 runs taking 2 wickets and Simon Swift ( 1 for 19)

The full detailed scorecards can be viewed on the club's playcricket page

Next weekend's games are also both at home . Audlem 1st X1 play host to Meakins from Hanley on Saturday and the Sunday team take on neighbours' Woore the following day. The bar will be open for drinks with a fine spell of weather forecast and the club would value your support.

The club lounge has been greatly improved with the fitting of new floor coverings supplied by Warmund House Carpets and expertly fitted by owner Ron Ayres ( Tel 01270 625656 : Unit E , Donnington Park Farm, Bridgemere, CW5 7PU )
