ASTON AND DISTRICT W.I. REPORT APRIL 2026

A lovely Spring afternoon saw a super turnout for our 3rd W.I. Meeting of 2026 on Friday, April 10th.

Our Meeting began, as usual, with a hearty rendition of Jerusalem, then our President Jenny Bourne commenced with Matters Arising, Apologies for Absence, and other items of interest.  Events taking place are listed at the end of this report.

MATTERS ARISING

Two of our Members had attended the W.I. Cheshire Meeting held at Nunsmere Hall and Sue gave us a brief description of events that took place and talks that were given, which they found extremely interesting and entertaining.

Our contribution of poppies for Standing with Giants, was 148.

Knitters and crocheters WELL DONE!

The Treasurer then reported on our finances.

Tickets for the Cheshire Show in June will be available to W.I. Members at a reduced rate, if ordered by May 15th.

Jenny then introduced Rosalind Lea  a delightful lady who gave a very entertaining and informative talk entitled BYSTANDERS CAN BE LIFESAVERS!

Rosalind has had a career in Nursing and specialised in Coronary Care.  She is now heavily involved in presenting talks to the general public and groups such as the W.I. on the vital help they could give to save someone`s life.

She explained clearly of procedures needed if we ever found ourselves in a situation where a member of the public could help somebody in distress.  Rosalind provided everyone with handouts with clear instructions of how give CPR Coronary Pulmonary Resuscitation.  We were then able to have a practise of resuscitation, which we carried out using two cushions, and sang `Staying Alive`. I am pleased to report that all the cushions survived and are recovering well!  Many defibrillators are placed around towns which are simple to use if needed.

Rosalind was given a well-deserved round of applause and thanked most sincerely by a member of our W.I. who had been in such a situation.

Tea, coffee and delicious cakes were then served and everyone had a good chat and catchup with each other.  A quick, light-hearted Music Quiz followed.

Finally, we had occasion to show our appreciation to Christine Bailey, our retiring Cheshire W.I. Advisor, she has given us help and advice throughout her time as Advisor, which we have been very grateful for.  She will be sorely missed.

A pretty arrangement of flowers, that one of our talented W.I. members had arranged, was presented to her along with a beautiful inscribed wooden trinket dish, this had been made by a member`s talented husband.
