Aston & District W.I. May 2019 Report

The meeting this month took place on Friday 3rd May and our President Jenny Bourne welcomed everyone.
Members were asked to vote for their preference for the Christmas Party: – yes, it's that time already! We were reminded to check on the Wrenbury Station Garden should we be passing.

A meeting is planned for 22nd May at Sound Chapel to discuss the entry for the 2019 Nantwich Show.
Both our Vice Presidents each gave a brief talk on the Resolutions and voting took place.

There were five poems about Love in the competition for the Group Meeting and it was won by Kay Epton.
The Scrabble is continuing, and the Bowls team won their match last Monday.
Our walkers will be meeting a Willey Moor Lock Tavern at 10.00am on Wednesday 8th May.
This month our Luncheon Club will be meeting at the Edgerton Arms at Broxton at 12.00 noon for 12.30 pm. All are welcome.

The speaker for the evening was Mr. John Hooley with his talk entitled 'Royal Trains and Their Passengers'. His talk was enhanced with a slide show of the different trains used by the royal family since Queen Victoria first travelled by train in 1842, a tradition which continues to the present day.
It was interesting to see the changes to the interior furnishings of the royal carriages. Victorian carriages were highly decorated with lots of padding to ensure a safe, comfortable ride as well as reducing noise levels. Interestingly our present Queen prefers a cleaner cut sparse décor. The outside of the carriages have remained the same colour, plum and split milk and all have the double doors with long windows where the Royals can wave to onlookers. It was definitely a fascinating insight into the Royal Trains and the vote of thanks was given by Mrs Janet Spencer.

The competition "A Royal Souvenir" was judged by Mr Hooley and was won by Diane Joslyn.
After tea and cakes we had a short competition of Royal Memorabilia which was won by Eileen, Liz and Maggie.
Another busy and enjoyable evening had by all.

On 7th June our speaker will be Mrs Norma Walmsley on "A Second Helping of Brunei" and the competition is a Holiday Postcard.
If you wish to come along then do come and join us as Visitors and New Members are always welcome. Details can be found on our website – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk
