Aston & District W.I. June 2019 Report

Our President Jenny Bourne welcomed everyone to our June meeting held on Friday 7th.
She continued by asking for a delegate to attend the Autumn Council meeting on the 21st of October.

Members were given information about the Social Evening organised for members and their families to be held at the Bickerton Poacher in July.
The result of the voting for the Christmas meal was announced and we are all looking forward to the get together at Broomhall.

This month the Scrabble and Bowls teams are meeting as usual.
The Walking Group are meeting on Wednesday 12th June at the Stapeley Café at 10.30am.

The Luncheon Club will be meeting at 'The Old Jack Inn' at Calverhall on Tuesday 11th June at 12.00 noon for 12.30pm.
All new members are welcome to attend

The speaker for the evening was Mrs Norma Walmsley. She had visited us previously, so this talk was entitled 'A second helping of Brunei'.  She was dressed in a long white gown embroidered with gold. This she told us was her formal evening uniform while working at the palace. All servants wore white.

Her husband set up the slide show, showing photographs of the Royal family of Brunei, past and present and also of the locals and how they lived. There was a photo of a Rolls Royce which had been lavishly decorated in gold. She also showed how the local people lived outside the city and also in the city.

The country is rich in oil so the royal family are very rich. The King decided to build new villages inland for the people who lived on the water but they didn't want to leave so he built better housing on the water in little communities – some for older people and some for newlyweds. The villages built inland are now mostly used by visiting Europeans. The talk certainly gave us an insight into how the other half live. The vote of thanks was given by Ann Pye.

After tea and cakes, the quiz was organised by Dorothy Relton and two prizes were awarded. The social time was very much enjoyed by all. The winner of the postcard competition was Maureen Slater and 6 lucky people went home with a raffle prize.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday 5th July with a talk entitled 'A Rural District Nurse's Life.' Why not come and visit our W.I. or have a look on our website.

If you wish to come along then do come and join us as Visitors and New Members are always welcome. More details can be found on our website – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk
