Yesterday, many members of the Audlem Art Group, led by Christine Johnson, visited the Manchester School of Art's Degree Show.
In a huge exhibition, students show their work and all of the Audlem Group were impressed by the sheer quality and variety of the work on display.
It ranged from Foundation Course displays to Fine Art; Fashion; Filmmaking including Animation; Graphic Design -see bottom photo; Illustration; Interior Design; Landscape and Architecture; Photography; Textiles and Three Dimensional Design.
The Audlem Art Group appeared particularly impressed with the quality of the Graphic Art on display including posters, brochures and extremely imaginative new typefaces. The Textile and Fashion displays also attracted much positive comment.
The Fine Art displays were of great interest although the copy explaining some students' work raised the odd eyebrow. While AudlemOnline reckons it can out-do most for bulls--t when on form, we now realise we need to go back to college to master the art!
How about this description of a strip of wood drawing a half circle on a plain grey background: "Finding sense in a nonsensical articulation of the conflict and imbalance often found between meaning and worth – intention and realisation, expenditure and productivity – by accepting and exploring the ambiguity of these spaces." It's magical!
Overall, the general feeling after this visit, and seeing so much inventive and skilful work, was optimism about the future. Britain is still a world leader in textile and graphic design, animation and fashion and much else related to the Arts. With students like this coming through, the future should be very exciting.
Details of the exhibition are on the top photo – click on it to enlarge. It's free entry and runs until 24th June.
