Steve Elliott is leading this walk:-

First recorded in 1280, the name "Lathkill" possibly has Scandinavian roots, the old Norse hlada-kill translating as "narrow valley with a barn'.

Lathkill is one of the finest of the limestone dales and has a number of caves, a disused quarry and several disused leadmines. Sections of the workings may still be seen, especially the aqueduct which carried water to a large water wheel which was once used

to pump water from the mine. Lots of other old workings may be seen along the river.

10ml (16km) with 1600ft (500m) of mostly gentle ascent. Its a pleasant 2-3 boot walk. There are a couple of stone stiles but mostly kissing gates. Some of the time we will be surrounded by sheep (we are in the Peak District after

all) and there's always the possibility of the odd cow, so reasonably dog friendly.

If anyone wishes a slightly shorter route of 8ml (13km) there is a cutoff for those who wish. We would all meet up again at the same place for lunch.

To maximise our daylight, we'll be leaving Audlem Car Park at 8am.

There is a free car park at the western end of the Youlgreave's main street and there are toilets nearby. DE45 1WB
