Twenty six members of ARS, the Audlem Ramblers Society, spent the weekend in the Lake District on a variety of hikes.

Based at Braithwaite just outside Keswick, a dozen enthusiasts set out on the famous Coledale circuit which includes Grisedale Pike, Hopegill Head and Crag Hill. It's a testing day but all were back in the pub in time to see the Grand National – and one of the party celebrate backing the winner. Others climbed Catbells, a lower but superb peak above Derwentwater with extensive views before descending for a lakeside return to Braithwaite.

Sunday saw a dozen climb up to Watendlath, a remote tarn-side spot where the enterprising farmer has established an excellent outside refreshment area set in glorious mountain scenery. There, in an almost Alpine atmosphere, very welcome coffees were enjoyed as the snow came down, fortunately not heavy enough to hinder the return descent.

The Saturday evening dinner was concluded with thanks to the primary organisers of the weekend, Steve and Chris Elliott and Andy Davidson.
