ARS in Snowdonia on Saturday

Next Saturdays walk is a fairly tough classic ramble over three 3,000 foot peaks (that doesn't mean a total of 9000 ft of climbing!) in Snowdonia and is organised by Will Williams. Below is his description: 

"This month's ARS walk will be a 5 booter because there are some semi-scramble sections.

"It's the Carnedd horseshoe – Pen yr Ole Wen – Carnedd fach – Carnedd Dafydd – Carnedd Llewlyn – Pen yr Helgi Du – Yr Braich back down to the A5. It's then across the road and a level finale back to the parking spot.

"Map: Ootdoor Leisure 17. Sheep are about so dogs will need to be controlled. No ducks were encountered on the recce.

"Start at Audlem car park 8.00am. Park somewhere on the A5 near the foot of Tryfan as near as we can to Glan Dena at the East end of Llyn Ogwen. It will take about 2hrs 10 ins to get there.

"We'll follow the Afon Lloer path up the East flank of Pen yr Ole Wen. It has a small steep section that involves a little scramble. Elderly dogs may struggle.

"The next section of note is a fairly steep descent from Carnedd Llewlyn. After that there's a beaut of a ridge at the bottom of which there's a steep short cut down to the slightly shorter route back- the track past the reservoir.

"That misses out a lovely little steep section up to Pen yr Helgi Du, from where there are some super views over previous ARS walk routes. Then it's an easy descent to the A5 but it will be soggy on the final sections – waterproof boots needed." 

Will tells me that in the event of bad weather he has plans for a lower level walk around Swallow Falls in Betws y Coed
