Yesterday saw twenty members of ARS, the Audlem Ramblers Society, off to the Wrekin for a walk organised by Peter Kay.
Despite a dire weather forecast of fog, a brilliant December day resulted in fabulous views across Shropshire where, to save the reputation of the Met Office, a little mist could be seen lingering above the nearby River Severn.
The 8.5 mile ramble took in both the Wrekin – and its TV transmitter that so many Audlem residents have now come to know after the digital re-tuning fiasco – and the lesser known hill, Ercall.
First up, or rather down under, was the Chairman, taking time off from flinging another prawn on the barbie, with a text message from Oz, ably read out by John Down. The text called upon the Secretary of ARS to take over the main speaking responsibility for this year.
Secretary Andy Davidson did not disappoint. Short, concise and very much to the point, as always he managed to find just the right word to summarise the year's frustrations and triumphs. Many an after-dinner speaker would do well to imitate his technique.
After the delivery of that word, met by the customary roar of approval, it was back to socialising. And a very good night was had by all.
