The Audlem Ramblers Society (ARS) enjoyed a weekend in the Yorkshire Dales based at Clapham, near to the town of Settle. Thirty one members headed off on a variety of walks on Saturday and yesterday.

Four intrepid walkers decided to take on the famous Three Peaks hike. Three younger members of the party – Andrew Down, Vanessa Knibbs and Will Williams – were first timers on this challenging circuit. They were accompanied by a Three Peaks veteran, Chris Knibbs, who was walking it for the fourth time. They headed off at the crack of dawn in wet and challenging conditions.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks involves a 24-mile hike taking in Pen-Y-Ghent (691 metres altitude), Ingleborough (723 metres) and Whernside (728 metres). The 24 miles involves some 5,000 feet of ascent and descent. All four were delighted to complete the distance in about ten hours.

Other hikes on offer included the ascent of Ingleborough and a ten-mile circuit of Crummack Dale, limestone country at its finest. This had the added attraction of a fine pub en route at Austwick while all walkers enjoyed the New Inn on arrival back in Clapham.

An excellent weekend was had by all with a curry night on Friday in Clapham's Bunk House – where the majority stayed – and a Saturday night dinner at the Brookhouse Bed & Breakfast. This is where more sensitive souls seeking en suite facilities, and more private sleeping arrangements, were bedding down.
