"This is the social occasion of the year" announced the chair as exactly fifty ARSs were seated last night at the Lord Combermere for their Christmas dinner.


Then, in a clearly unexpected change to the timetable, she called upon the secretary to deliver his always eagerly anticipated summary of his feelings about the year and the Festive season.


So early in proceedings, and without support from speech therapist Timothy Taylor, how will he cope, we wondered! With aplomb, was the answer as, after an initial complaint that his name had been misspelt on his handwritten placecard – a little niggardly, some thought, as those cards alone possibly cost more than the annual membership – before gathering himself and, as ever, finding just the right word for the occasion.


ARS, the Audlem Ramblers Society, had earlier enjoyed a very pleasant circuit from Loggerheads, taking in the scene of the Battle of Bloor Heath, before gathering for their Christmas dinner.


The Lord Combermere's staff were on top form as a packed restaurant was served with exemplary efficiency.
