Yesterday's ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk from Grindley Brook, near Whitchurch, meant an opportunity to meet up afterwards with ex-Audlem licensees, Steve and Helen Nash, now running the Horse & Jockey. Mulled wine and mince pies were prepared for the thirty five walkers.

The walk was followed by one of the social events of the season – the ARS Christmas dinner. Fifty members, a record attendance, enjoyed the hospitality of the Lord Combermere. After an excellent three course dinner, mounting expectation around the room meant a highlight of the evening, the speeches, was near.

First up was the Chairman, Christine Johnson, who thanked the evening's organisers and the staff at the Lord C plus all those that had led walks during the year which had also seen the launch of the popular Short-ARS programme.

She than called upon the Secretary of ARS to give his customary speech. Secretary Andy Davidson did not disappoint. As short as ever, concise and very much to the point, yet again he managed to find just the right word to summarise the year's frustrations and triumphs. If anything, his intonation was the best yet and was greeted by the customary roar of approval.

Rumours that a collection of the secretary's speeches is to be released as a special Christmas DVD have proved unfounded. Perhaps next year – it will be a certain success if only the right title can be found.
