Landlords reminded of new laws

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning landlords that they are breaking the law if they fail to provide their tenants with smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide detectors.

Regulations which came into force in October mean it is compulsory for smoke alarms to be fitted in rented homes. Carbon monoxide alarms must also be fitted in properties which burn solid fuels.
They must be fitted on every floor of the property and landlords should check the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy, with potential penalties of up to £5,000 if they don't comply.

Mark Cashin, Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Chair of CFOA's Home Safety Committee, said: "While overall smoke alarm ownership in the country stands at around 90%, those living in private rented homes are far less likely to have a working smoke alarm.
"Statistically people are four times more likely to die in a fire in the home if there is no working smoke alarm and over the next 10 years it is estimated that the new laws will result in 231 fewer deaths and 5,860 less injuries."

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service still has a number of FREE alarms that are available to fit in their properties. Landlords wanting to take up nthis offer should complete the online form at http://www.cheshirefire.gov.uk/news-events/latest-news/alarms4life-smoke-alarms-for-rented-properties
