Antoinette Sandbach loses vote of confidence

At a meeting of Eddisbury Conservatives on Tuesday Evening, members were asked to vote on the the following

• Should the whip be returned, the Association has confidence in Antoinette – yes or no. Outcome – no
• Eddisbury Conservative Association wish to commence the process of selection of their candidate asap – yes or no. Outcome – yes.

ANTOINETTE SANDBACH MP LOSES CONFIDENCE VOTE AMONG HER CONSTITUENCY PARTY MEMBERS

Eddisbury MP Antoinette Sandbach lost a vote of confidence this evening.

The vote was symbolic but opens the door to formal deselection. Ms Sandbach is currently appealing the suspension of the Conservative whip. The Conservative Party will need to consider whether it would be an abuse of due process to select a new candidate while this appeal is ongoing.

The meeting, held in the run-up to a crunch vote in the House of Commons, decided that they have no confidence in Antoinette largely because of her position on Brexit. Antoinette voted for the Brexit deal on all three occasions.

Rumours of entryism in Eddisbury Conservative Association have been rife, with Ms. Sandbach raising concerns on a number of occasions.

Conservative Party rules mean that someone who has been a member for just three months is entitled to vote out their MP.

In the meeting, Ms. Sandbach was given just six minutes to speak in her defence, which limited her opportunities to explain her position in detail.

In her speech, Antoinette Sandbach MP said, "I have stood up for all of my constituents. If the Conservative Party becomes the Brexit Party we will not win the next election."

Speaking after the meeting Antoinette Sandbach MP said:

"This is obviously deeply disappointing, but I won't allow an unrepresentative handful of people decide who gets to be the MP for tens of thousands of Eddisbury voters.

"All my constituents can rest assured that I will continue to represent them in Parliament, standing up for a sensible, pragmatic Brexit deal and confirming that it is what the people want through a Final Say confirmatory referendum."
