A talk about the services provided by the Alzheimer's Society was given by Jo Hawkins, the Support Services Manager for the Society in the Cheshire East area at the ADCA AGM on Friday afternoon..

She described how there are more than 200 recognised variations of the general condition of dementia and how important it is to be diagnosed correctly so that appropriate action can be taken. The services that the Alzheimer's Society can provide include

  • Dementia support service

  • Dementia cafes (there is one at Nantwich – meets in the Peacock)

  • Caring & Coping courses

  • Activity Groups

  • Specialist services for early onset dementia

  • Evening Support Group

  • Signposting to other services and benefits

  • Reminiscence library

  • Talks to carers and professionals to raise awareness.

The current estimate is that in Cheshire East only 42% of people with dementia have a formal diagnosis.

The emphasis is on getting correct diagnosis so that correct action and support can be taken.
