Audlem councillors are to check out the village Homewatch scheme in the wake of a spate of house break-ins in recent weeks. Audlem homeowners have been warned to be on their guard against burglars after thieves smashed their way into homes in the village.

Councillor Bill Consterdine told last week's Parish Council meeting he'd heard of at least three breaks-ins in the village in the past few weeks. "People should be vigilant and lock up," he warned.

Houses in Broadways, Whitchurch Road and Aston have been targeted in recent weeks, councillors were told. A jemmy, or similar tool, has been used in an attempt to force open patio doors at one home.

Worried councillors questioned if the village Homewatch scheme was still active in Audlem. Councillor Pam Seddon said she had been assured by officials in Crewe recently that there was a Homewatch presence in the village and that co-ordinators were still active.

Councillor Bill Consterdine said he wasn't aware of an active village Homewatch scheme. "There used to be one but I didn't know it was still active," he said.

Councillors are now to invite the Homewatch area co-ordinator to explain the current situation and let councillors know who the current Homewatch co-ordinators are.
