The Town Hall rafters rang with the shouts and cheers and occasional groans of more than 120 happy punters. Nine thrilling races brought us triumph and disaster (fortunately not too much of the latter). Odds were calculated, bets were laid, pre-race appraisals made us momentarily wonder whether we'd chosen the right speedy steed to put our money on, but too late – can't get our bets back now!
Hot Pie and Chips with Mushy Peas delivered to each table were greeted with enthusiasm and consumed with speed so we could hurry back to the real business of the night, laying more bets and buying tickets from Olive Stretch, raffle runner extraordinaire, for a chance to win one of the lovely prizes donated by local businesses.
To round off the evening on a high note, our Last Chance to Win Race was preceded by a highly competitive auction for ownership of the horses, with the owners of the winning horse taking home half the bid proceeds. As you can imagine, they were well happy!
This wonderful event has raised the magnificent sum of £1900 for ADCA, which we will put towards all the clubs and services we run for older people and carers in Audlem and District, and our Medical Transport Service.
We are extremely grateful to all our sponsors:
Sunnyside Touring Park; Coole Acres Fishery & Leisure Park; The Stagger Inn; Rosa Small Pet Holidays; Crystal Financial Planning; Pure Ground Surface Specialists; Dressing Rooms; SJT Motor Company; EPS Barbers; Café at Bridge 80; Marshall Plant Hire Ltd.
We also thank our generous raffle prize donors:
Boots Pharmacy; Braids Hairdressers; the Audlem Co-op; Dressing Rooms; 11th Hour Gift Shop; Flowers by Ruth; Oxtail & Trotter; The Tearoom @N° 11; Audlem Dry Cleaners; Audlem Fish & Chip Shop; Williams Newsagents.
Let's not forget our valiant volunteers who helped prepare and manage the event – and clear up afterwards!
And last, but very definitely not least, thank you to all our wonderful punters, we hope you had a great time and we'll see you again!
