Drivers through Audlem last Saturday and Sunday afternoon may have been puzzled to see groups of people wandering around armed with a map and descriptions of various gardens in and around the village.

On enquiry, all was revealed as the ADAS Open Gardens Weekend, an event which last took place in 2008.

In spite of somewhat changeable weather, about 180 people set forth to visit 17 gardens whose owners have been slaving away since last October to ensure that their gardens were in tip top condition for the weekend following mid-summer's day.

The gardens, both great and small, most not visible from the road frontage, present an intriguing insight into the work which goes into creating these beautiful places and all due credit must go to their owners for their willingness to share them for one weekend at least for other people's enjoyment.

Nine of the gardens are located within 600 yards of the village centre, those further afield being accessed by car although some people hiked to them as well.

The owners of the Open Gardens will be gratified to know that the feedback from their visitors was nothing but praise for their efforts and appreciation for providing such an interesting and enjoyable weekend.

ADAS are most grateful to all owners for putting on such a wonderful show. Additional thanks go to those owners who generously donated home made cakes, tea and other refreshments and also to ASET who kindly provided their Display Caravan free of charge for the sale of tickets.

Our thanks also to Andrew in the Post Office and Judy at Williams' newsagents for their good work in selling tickets in advance.

The purpose of this event was not so much to raise funds but more for residents and other visitors to enjoy our lovely village.

As it turned out, a profit of some £680 net of expenses was realised thanks to the generosity of all concerned.
