What to do on a Sunday morning following a large egg and bacon sandwich? Dig and sweep pavements, of course.
Judging for North West in Bloom was carried out in mid-July. In preparation for the day many fabulous ADAS volunteers swept car parks, dug back overgrown verges and uncovered hidden drains. Weeds tried desperately to hide when they spotted us coming towards them armed with trowels, spades and secateurs, but they did not escape.
As part of pre-judging day preparations, one of the grass triangles at the bottom of Windmill Drive (post box side) was dug back to reveal the original edging – some think the edging hasn't seen the light of day for more than twenty years. Up to two foot of pavement was reclaimed!
The second side of Windmill Drive was left untouched so that we could show the Judges a 'before and after'. Smart move, eh? Reality being we ran out of time ahead of Judging Day. And our beers were getting warm!
Sunday 19th August saw a wonderful band of ADAS volunteers turn out for the second dig out – the remaining Windmill Drive grass triangle. Again, at least two foot of pavement was reclaimed!
Comments from passing villagers were very supportive of the work ADAS carries out to help keep Audlem clean, tidy and floral. One gentleman said, 'at my age a clean, safe payment is worth much'. Lovely to hear all the comments.
After work was completed on the second Windmill Drive triangle the team moved on to clear the path from the bridge up to Green Lane. As with the Windmill Drive triangles, this was also in an overgrown condition which resulted in a large part of the pavement lost to the encroaching hedgerow debris.
A big shout out to the ADAS volunteers without whom this task would not have been made short work of.
