ADAPT Food Group market, this week we have
Free other apple varieties including some of my favourite eaters Orleans Reinette.
The tree was pruned hard last winter and has responded with its best crop. It is probably a French variety, described first in 1776 by Dutch botanist Knoop. The history is confused, especially with Golden Reinette. It is widely distributed in Europe, and has 121 synonyms.
In the UK it was found first by Edward or George Bunyard who found it among a box of Blenheims, sent it to their nursery for identification and introduced it as Winter Ribston. This was corrected in 1916 and reintroduced, this time under the correct name. "Golden Reinette". Bunyards description: "The skin is yellowy green, flushed with orange/ orange-red, which has on top many fine patches of russet and freckles. The skin inside is creamy white, with a complexity of flavours- sweet and somewhat orange -like, also rather nutty. If cooked, the slices keep their shape At best, aromatic, nutty; sweet, firm, rather dry flesh". My favourite!!
PS the best apple keepers in my orchard are still on their tree -- more about those when they become ripe.
Today it is National Honey Day and the British Beekeepers' Association are inviting you to share in this day. They are encouraging everyone to buy a jar of local honey, produced by bees here in the UK.
