Audlem Canal & River Trust Towpath Taskforce's event, which took place on Saturday 11th June, continued with the work of improving the towpath and visitor experience.

On Saturday, both CRT Staff and regular volunteers completed the remaining project tasks and reached a key milestone, the towpath from Lock 15 all the way to above Lock 12 has been repaired, improved or cleaned, improving visitor and boater experience to the canal and Audlem.

The towpath, from the Shroppie Fly/Lock 13 to Lock 14 was partially resurfaced, dressed or repaired and the towpath below Lock 14 was resurfaced.

For those who are regular visitors to this section of canal in the non-summer months would be familiar with the large pools of water and mud on this section giving a poor experience of the towpath.

So as of now, no less than approximately 355m of towpath has been cleared, dressed, repaired or resurfaced on the Audlem flight. The work completed:

  • Resurfaced the towpath between Locks 14 and 15, 25m of towpath with new surface and 10m repaired.
  • Filled in pot holes and repaired 125m of towpath between Locks 13 and 14.
  • Repaired the canal edge above Lock 14
  • Repaired the surface next to the lock quadrant at Lock 14 removing a tripping hazard.
  • Repaired the surface adjacent to the water point, covering over exposed pilings, removing a tripping hazard.
  • Edged the grass revealing the coping stones, between Locks 12 and 13m, improving the boater experience of the moorings.

A real big thank you to all who supported the recent events, which would not have been the success it had been without the determination and pride of the CRT Norbury staff and regular Audlem Volunteers.

AudlemOnline adds: The Canal & River Trust's survey and workshops earlier this year identified the state of parts of the towpath as a major issue. We suspect even the most optimistic of us did not imagine so much work to improve the towpath would be carried out so quickly and with the vital help of so many volunteers.

Congratulations to all involved and many thanks for improving the local canal experience for visitors and residents alike.
