The infamous Dr Beeching wasn't responsible for the closure of the Nantwich – Market Drayton – Wellington railway line (Chatbox: 27 August). In his report: 'The Reshaping of British Railways', published in March 1963, all the intermediate stations between Nantwich and Wellington, including Audlem and Cox Bank Halt, are listed as 'under consideration for closure before the formulation of the report'. The last passenger train to call at Audlem ran on Saturday 7 September 1963, though the official closure date was 9 September.
The first passenger train over what was initially the Nantwich to Market Drayton Railway, calling at Audlem and Adderley, ran on 19 October 1863. To mark the 160th anniversary of the opening of the line, I'm giving a talk 'One hundred years of trains to Audlem: 1863-1963' at the Audlem History Society meeting on Thursday 21 September, at 7.30 pm, in the scout and guide hall in Cheshire Street. Come along and find out how the opening of the railway transformed our village; hear about the industrial quantities of damsons shipped out in the 19th century and learn who was shipping in barrels of beer, apart from the publicans! Visitors and new members are very welcome.
I have just received a penalty ticket for parking on the public car park in Audlem. Cheshire Street was lined with cars and no spaces were free on the car park bar a couple of disabled spaces. I parked partially on the yellow hatch markings at the cemetery end next to the field at 10.38 am and returned at 10.45 am to find a parking ticket. I had carefully parked in a safe place causing no obstruction. Where are we supposed to park for a surgery visit? Surely in view of the building work taking up several spaces Cheshire East could give us a little leeway.. Totally disgusted! No wonder local business are suffering! A £70 penalty charge for a 5 minute blood test!

This village for parking has become a joke.
I work full time within the village and now am struggling to find anywhere to park resulting me parking on a residential side road.
The main car park is always full and main roads have time limits where are we to park?
If I am struggling at 8:30am then what about customers/passing trade?
Then I see a DAFT idea of charging for the car park?!?! Are we truly trying to drive away business to the local area.
Sorry for the rant but hopefully it is not just me feeling this frustration.
Noticed a mountain bike abandoned against a hedge on Woore Road yesterday, as of this evening it was still there so I've stored it safely, please get in touch if you think it's yours.
My dad (Brian Burrows) has been very much enjoying the responses to our recent post about the song lamenting the closure of Audlem station in the 1960s. "I am especially interested to hear about the possibility that the closure came about before Dr Beeching was involved" he says. "If this was the case, I am intrigued to know the reasons for Audlem's closure being mistakenly included in the song." He would be delighted to hear about any further information anyone might have about this.
He has also being enjoying listening to Frank Turner's more contemporary version of the Flanders and Swann song highlighted by an Audlem resident (link below). They said that until now they had not noticed that dear old Audlem was referred to in the song – despite playing it regularly. (Every day is a school day!)

Hi
We had Steve Emery Roofing.
Very pleased with the work done.
Try Anthony Jess 07913-533859 anthonyjessroofing@outlook.com
Our ring door bell picked up on a strange man dressed up in what seems to be female clothing, a handbag and carrying a blanket. He was seen approaching people's houses and looking through their windows and getting into a white car and driving away at around 1:15am this morning. He's been seen on a few of our neighbours ring door bells also and reported to the police. This was on and around McKelvey Way.
Just a heads up, keep your eyes and ears open and your doors / sheds locked.
I have used Anthony Jess and was very pleased with his work and reliability 07913 533859

Who is the clerk at Audlem cemetery?
Surefire Pest Control 07957 856978 surefirepestcontrol.co.uk Used them a couple of times very good
The comments are not correct. Only one tree was attended to on Saturday with good reason and the 2 Trees with a TPO are fine and will remain so.
We would have been pleased to chat and reassure you as you walked past if you had wanted to.
Can anyone recommend a roofer who might be able to do some repairs for us?
Specifically, some mortar has fallen out from the pointing on the gable end of the roof and needs to be replaced. The weatherboard needs to be rubbed down and resealed. And finally, there are three broken slates that need to be replaced.
The building is a 2-storey hay barn, with a slate roof.
Thank you!
Hi,
We have just used Craig Hough of CH Plastering who is based in Nantwich. He was absolutely brilliant, prompt, efficient, tidy and did an excellent job re-plastering around a window.

The tree Lucy mentions is a Turkey Oak. It is about 150yrs+ old. Turkey Oaks were brought from the Mediterranean in the 18th-19th century, as a quick growing wood to replace our English Oaks used in ship-building etc. There are three of the species around Turnpike Fields and can be distinguished from the English Oak or the Sessile (Welsh) Oak by having pointed ends to the leaves (some say like Turkey feet). When the trees had grown it was discovered that the wood is no good for ship building as the wood splits easily! In a tree survey in 2019 the tree was described as "An excellent specimen. Single stemmed with a balanced crown. Good vigour and no major visible defects."
Is there anyone local who can get rid of a wasps nest in the eaves at the back of my house
Hi
Can anyone recommend a reliable plasterer please.
Many thanks
I've just been for my weekly Sunday morning stroll whilst walking past beach tree house on Woore road near mount pleasant I've noticed a large number of trees have been removed from the property. I'm sure these trees have tree protection orders on them. Can someone advise on the best people to contact about this. It's horrible to see such beautiful tree removed from anywhere.
Another post to recommend Chris at Paul Jones Pest Control. On day I contacted him, he was willing to attend same evening to deal with a wasp's nest in the eaves of house. We've used him in previous years and he certainly knows his wasps.
