Andrew Wood on Broken 'manhole' covers by the Buttermarket – Update

17th May 2023 @ 5:09pm

There are a few others that are going the same way, its due to people repeatedly parking vehicles on them when they are designed for footpath use only.

ken lee on Corbrook Flooding

17th May 2023 @ 2:10pm

Re mention of suggestion of putting in kerbstones – is this not going to make the situation even worse ? It would mean that the water would lie even longer, as the kerb would act like a dam. Surely the obvious way is to either renew or unblock the drains to the brook that are already there.

Tim Denning on Covid 19 booster

16th May 2023 @ 4:33pm

I'm eligible for a Covid booster but the locations suggested for Audlem residents are not really very accessible unless you have access to a car! Are there any plans to offer sessions in Nantwich or even in Audlem itself.

Joanna Allman on Broken 'manhole' covers by the Buttermarket – Update

16th May 2023 @ 11:48am

Having initially reported the broken covers via CE Highways/streetwise a while ago (& popped the cones around them) I've just taken a call from a member of their team to say it's BT job and they're passing it onto them – marked urgent. No timeline could be given at this stage.

Billy! Your message made me laugh regarding your licence!! Some people might say that many Audlem residents have gained them from a cracker!!

I too remember Mrs Shuker's shop, back in the early 80's, when we had a liberal bus driver who would let us off and spend our hard earned pocket money on a packet of grots!!

Mathew Capper on Plastic Stacking Chairs

Random request:

Does anyone have any old stackable plastic chairs they would kindly donate or accept a donation for?

We need 10 for community events in the Pau run and ride shop, due to shortage of space in store they would have to be stackable.

Thanks in advance
Mathew

Peter Morgan on Audlem Brook

A few years ago, before Covid, I recall seeing and photographing small fatbergs stranded on sandbanks in the brook, east of the village. They were coming down from the outdated and under capacity Buerton sewage works, hence the work now being undertaken by U.U. Also on occasion, I have noticed that the water flowing under our bridge had turned black from contamination. The worrying aspect is the potentially dangerous levels of chemical contamination of substances such as mercury and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, although the disclosed results do not specify the levels involved. I wonder where they are coming from, household chemicals, dairy detergents, road run off (tyre degradation)? The possibilities in modern society seem endless.

Billy Gibbons on Swanbach stores – history request

I remember going into Mrs Shukers shop (Swanbach) and thinking how trusting she was, meaning; if she was in the house rather than in the shop itself, you had to ring a bell on the counter to let her know you were there and she'd come and serve you. I wonder if she could do that in this day and age and have any stock left? A bit of a begger to park your car outside the shop as I remember although I don't know how I remember that as I was 12 years old at the time and I hadn't yet won my Drivers Licence in the Tombola at the Audlem Country Fair and Pig Worrying Extravaganza 1973.

Try looking up the Tithe Maps for Cheshire online.....type in your postcode and then the Tithe map is from 1842 and gives the owner and occupier of the plot when it's picked out. The first ordnance survey map made in 1875 is also available by "changing maps " as are some aerial views. There will be more information available by interrogating one of the genealogy sites such as Find myPast.

If you look in the history archive and find Swanbach in 'places' there are some photos. It features in several old postcards too. In the 70's you just went in the front door and there was a counter straight ahead, sold cigarettes, tins, packets of tea etc

According to the official figures, the turnout was 37.47%.
The geographical area of the Audlem Ward takes in quite a number of surrounding parishes hence the total population figure of over 4900 which is greater than the latest Audlem parish census total.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. So perhaps someone with a camera and a pair of wellingtons will go into The Brook and take some photographs of the underside of The Bridge?

William pearson on Swanbach stores – history request

Hi,
we live at Swanbach stores and we'd like to find out more about the history of our home.
Does anyone have any photos or information about the building or its previous occupiers from when it was a blacksmiths, a pub and most recently a shop several years ago?

If so please could you let us know. Thanks for any help.

Thanks

Kevin. I believe that the ward and the parish are two different things. The ward covers a much bigger geographical area and thus population. 5312 is the population of the ward as far as I can ascertain.

Nick Smith on Hardwood Double Glazed Stable Door

Can anyone recommend some to replace the locking mechanism on a hardwood double glazed stable type door. The lock is not fully opening hence the door stick.

Elisabeth Fisher on Log Splitting

9th May 2023 @ 4:19pm

Can anyone recommend someone that can split some logs for me please.

We had some conifers taken down and the logs were left but they are currently too big to go in the log burner.

Thank you.

Bryan Clydesdale on Footpath Closure

8th May 2023 @ 4:59pm

I have been in touch with the Cheshire East Public Rights of Way Team (PROW) about this. Their reply was;

" Indeed, there is a temporary closure on this path due to the integrity of the bridge structure. We keep replacing notices and barriers but they get taken down, and the issue with the bridge is not evident, certainly from above. Whilst it's a small structure, the brick arch has failed. The structure is inspected by Cheshire East Highways Structures team who have the expertise in such bridges, and it's on their recommendation that it remain closed. They have been tasked to assess and cost options for its repair."

There is no indication as to when these repairs will be carried out.

If anyone has any news of other footpath problems in Audlem please let me know and I will report them to the Cheshire East PROW.

Thank you

Bryan

Looks like there were 18 spoiled or unreadable votes in the Cheshire East Audlem local election.

Following the posting by Colin Cliffs, I checked a few numbers and cannot make sense of them. The population of Audlem at the last census in 2021 was 2154, the total votes cast for Audlem ward on May 4th was 1573. Making an assumption that there are approximately 20% of the population under 18 and therefore ineligible to vote leaves 1724 eligible to vote. That results in a turnout of 91% which seems highly improbable. Does anyone know the actual figures?
