I heard a rumour that the Open Gardens weekend will not now go ahead this year. I don't recall seeing any announcement on AOL to this effect. However, having looked at the list of events it does appear to have disappeared from the Sept 9-10 weekend slot. I've been looking forward to this and have kept that weekend free especially. Can someone confirm what has happened?

I was interested in reading David's potted history of the Old Bakery. Can anyone explain the difference between The Old Bakery and the property on the corner of Vicarage Road called The Old Bakehouse (CW3 0AB)? In addition from the Tithe Maps of 1842, George Haughton as owner and William Davies as occupant appears on a number of plots...43, which is the Old Bakery and adjacent plots 44&45. Along with plots 647, 32, 611, 605, 608, 606 & 592. There maybe more? William Davies also appears on plots 626 owned by Thomas Davies and 34 owned by George Harper. Plot 34 consists of 5 houses, 4 garden, a shop and the post office, and is actually the block terrace on Shropshire Street which today includes the Undertaker, Flower Shop and the boat business . The other occupants of this block are those listed in David's article, William Dooley etc.. Perhaps William Davies was more than an Agricultural Labourer and employed the occupants of Plot 34?

I don't recall a Weaver Valley Park proposal, although there is a stretch of park called something similar in Winsford. I do recall the proposal for a Weaver Way which I think was originally planned to run from Nantwich to Frodsham, but after the late Bob Cartwright became involved was extended to start just south of Audlem. It's still there with signs and a website and stretches for 40 miles from here to Frodsham.

Like Andrew P Smith I too remember Beaman's first with Mrs Beaman then much later George running it. Friday afternoon used to be the day the ladies shopped (my Mother included) they would then meet in Beaman's for a chat Mrs Beaman as well.
The ice cream was the best but we always called the sauce juice I don't remember why. George used to have an ice cream cart and would go around Audlem on Friday nights, I was lucky my Father went out and it was ice creams all round.
Later when my sons were born they went into Beaman' s for cornets when we visited my parents. I also took my eldest Grandson to the shop Alice Farrington (my neighbour growing up) worked there then. Happy memories I do wish I could eat another Beaman's Cornet.

Very Surprised that I seem to be the first to answer your request. The famous Ice Cream Shop was Beaman's at that time probably operated by Mrs Beaman assisted by her equally famous son George!! who continued the tradition until retirement(I believe) when the premises and recipe was taken on by Alg Halliwell and his wife? and part of it was turned into what is now The Priest's Hole This information comes from a faulty memory, so is subject to correction and/or enlargement.
I was a regular visitor to Mrs Beaman's as a child en route to ,or returning home, from school at the old primary school on Cheshire Street!!I still miss the thrill of a Beamans' cornet with raspberry sauce topping?

As I understand it, APC, after discussions with their planning consultant, decided to still allow this major village event to still go ahead as previously approved. Considering that Fete's/Shows have been held on this field since 1911, there's a well established precedent!

We are staying near Audlem, 60 years ago it wasn't unusual to go to Audlem for an ice cream, from a small shop just opposite the church in the centre of the village. We thought it was the best ice cream in the world! I can't remember the name of it but possibly began with a 'B' and was very well known? Would be interested to know what became of it Thanks

The timeline of this issue goes back to the days when local authorities provided the ubiquitous Dialek plastic rat magnets to assist homeowners to compost their green waste. This I'm guessing is about 20 years ago. Having already built our own compost bins, we rejected the offer. We then invested in a substantial chipper/shredder to deal with our waste and aid in composting it. When the offer of free green waste bins came along, again at the expense of those of us who had already made adequate provision for green waste, we had no need to take up the offer, but we were involuntarily contributing to the cost of paying for the free service enjoyed by others. Now, at long last, the council is grasping the harsh nettle of reality and is imposing a hopefully realistic charge for this service previously subsidized by those of us who have invested in their own arrangements.

Just read that the Navio lounge in the old Barclays Bank in Nantwich is donating 20p to the centre for every coffee sold in their first month open. Worth popping in?

Alg and Jane retired some months ago and the new man could not make a go of it. The owner of the property says there are no plans to reopen the cafe again soon. It would not be good to let someone take the cafe on in the expectation that it would provide him or her with a living and then find that it does not do so.
An ideal tenant would be someone who had an independent income, just wanted a cafe for the lifestyle, and would not be bothered whether it made a profit or a loss.

To answer Suzie Warren, if it comes to pass a charge is implemented you either want the service or not, and so your questions become irrelevant

How will they (the bin crews) know who has paid and who hasn't?
And assuming they have a spreadsheet in their cab showing payers – will they drive past the non-payers?
Will they collect all the current bins and issue, say, shiny purple ones for the payers?
So many questions.

In reply to Geoff Oakes problem, The best and most humane way is to simply buy yourself a box of Mothballs. Uncover each molehill to expose the channel, drop a few mothballs into the area and recover with the loose soil. You will not see the moles again.
It has always worked for me and you are not killing any moles. Simples !!

Can anyone recommend a local mole catcher as yet again my moles are back! There is no mention of anyone who provides this service in the directories section of AOL. Thanks!
