John Tilling on Garage door

2nd June 2024 @ 5:29pm

Our garage door is an "up-and-over" type (not powered) which has broken, irreparably as far as I can see.

I'm looking for a local supplier and fitter of such a door.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Peter Morgan on The Bells Return

2nd June 2024 @ 12:47pm

The Bells of Audlem (and the disconnected clock)

Across the parish, woods and fields
The bells of Audlem once more peal
Their joyful tones and melodious song
Again at the centre of where they belong.
And so, between bells and tower
Can Salfords accursed fixed hour
Be restored to life in greatest haste
And so ensure that a more timely pace
Will once more, be fully enjoyed
By all such residents, gainfully employed
And for those who choose to slumber on
Or rely on digital sophistry, be gone
With your newfangled devices
For two centuries or more the bell suffices!

Eric Leeson on My apple tree

1st June 2024 @ 10:22pm

Does anybody know why my 4 year old apple tree is losing its fruit so early in the season? The small apples are about 1 cm across and each morning there are lots of them that have fallen from the tree. Soon there will be no fruit left. If you were to lightly touch the apples some of them would fall to the ground. I have not witnessed any pests or otherwise on the leaves or branches. I planted the tree for our grandchildren to enjoy and it is the only apple tree that we have. I hope somebody on AOL can provide me with advice on what to do.

Regarding the two items on advice how to bleed radiators, in our house in Wales before coming to Audlem, I always bled the radiators with the heating system running. After moving to Audlem I did the same and the system developed very loud banging sounds when switched on. when The heating engineers came to fix this they were horrified that I had bled the radiators with the system running.
So I don't know! I only know how I do it now. ...... Maybe Maureen has a point in wanting a professional to advise her her.

No doubt there are many people who bleed their radiators with the boiler/pump on. Doing it this way risks scalding from hot water eventually escaping from the top of the radiator. Professional advice on the correct/safe way to complete the task can be found at –

Pauline Hobbs on Missing cat

I read with interest what Paul said about bleeding the radiators. I always thought (and it's the way I do it) that this was done with the heating system on so that you can quickly tell which ones needed bleeding because the problem radiators will have cold areas and do not fully heat. As he says, it is a simple job, but at the end of it, if there is a lot of air in the system, bleeding it may require the water in the system to be topped up after it has filled up all the gaps.

Hi Paul, Thank you for that advice about bleeding my radiators, but because the radiators are very old I would be happier if a professional plumber called and did them for me. Maureen

Paul Jamesbrook on Radiators

Hello Maureen, very easy to do yourself. Just get a radiator key (perhaps try the great Williams of Audlem)

Start from the furthest radiator from your boiler.

1. Make sure your heating is off and the radiators are cold.

2. Hold an old cloth, under the bleed valve, and insert the radiator key.

3. Turn anti-clockwise until air starts escaping (you'll hear a hissing noise).

4. When water starts to escape, turn the key clockwise to re-tighten the valve.

5. Repeat on other radiators that need attention, making your way back towards the boiler.

6. Turn your heating back on and check if your radiators are now heating up correctly.

Hope that might save you a few bob

Paul Jamesbrook on Ticks in Turnpike Field

28th May 2024 @ 9:54am

Hello, thought I would let people know my dogs picked up some small ticks in Turnpike Field over the weekend. It's not a problem as they have both been treated with Frontline. Just to be aware especially if your dogs have not been treated also beware if you are wearing shorts. Also I know most people will know but don't just pull them out in case you leave the head of the tick in. Vaseline smeared on the tick will make them withdraw or use a special tick remover which can be brought online very cheaply.

Gary Meadows on Tree pruning Cox Bank

25th May 2024 @ 9:53pm

Over the last thirty five years we have lived in Cox Bank my wife and David Price have planted trees in the lane leading into the village. Recently I planted whips and 3 of them were ripped out by person unknown. In the last two weeks a walnut tree which I planted about 15 years ago has been quite severely pruned. May I ask the person responsible to explain Why? I accept I have no ownership of the tree despite purchasing it planning it and caring for it , so I would like to understand why it was pruned.
