Peter Morgan on Paul Collis-Smith

17th June 2026 @ 1:01pm

As ever, Trooping of the Colour was a spectacular event last Saturday and it has been extra special these last few years to see our local lad, Paul Collis-Smith conducting the Household Cavalry Band whilst navigating his horse using only his knees. Many congratulations Paul on your promotion to Lt Colonel and command of the massed bands in London. Of course, knowing the musical talents of your mother Jenny and the organizational capabilities of your father, Mark (those scout camp expeditions will never be forgotten) it comes as little surprise to those who have lived in the village for the last half century or so, that Paul has achieved so much. But not forgetting the talents of his brother and sisters who have also made a positive contribution to society, it’s just that the uniform appealed to Paul and the horse does all the walking!

David Pudney on Woodpeckers

They had been coming to our garden numerous times a day over the last few weeks, one time we had three of them at once. I haven't seen them for a couple of days now....... I guess my B&M fatballs are no longer good enough.

Love the photos. The way to recognise them is that the youngsters (this year's fledglings) have the red cap on top of their head. The adult males are brightly coloured and have a red spot on the back of their head and the adult females have the same colouring as the males but somewhat duller and no red spot on their heads. We always lo ok forward to this time of year when wehave a regular brood with up to 5 young on good years.

I agree Roy, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers are lovely birds, however, I think the picture you've submitted is of one of this years youngsters.

Male Greater Spotted Woodpeckers have a crimson spot on the back of the head, whereas juveniles have the red spot on the crown along with duller white plumage.

I wonder if Tits take exception to them as they will predate on their youngsters I believe.

Malcolm Rhodes on Grass cutting on the Turnpike field

8th June 2026 @ 7:32am

I walk my dog every morning on the Turnpike field. In recent times the grass cutting regime has changed. When the field is wet (most of the time with morning dew or rain) it has become very unpleasant. Has a decision been takento allow the field to develop into a wildflower meadow of some kind? If so, this will be interrupted periodically by the need to allow cars on to the field for special events. Is this a cost issue? I would be happy to pay a small amount each year to the Parish Council to keep the grass low for walkers. I would be grateful if anyone has any light to shed on this..

Does anyone know someone who might be able to tell me if my Massey Ferguson goldstar is worth renovating and if so would be interested to do it for me. I would love to see it back in use.

Is there anybody available who could replace a double key lock with a thumb and key lock?

I understand it’s a very quick job but I do not feel like approaching it myself. I do have the replacement lock. Live in Audlem.
