Your thoughts on flashing lights

The Chatbox has been busy in recent days with a range of views about the new parking arrangements in Shropshire Street and the impact they may have on traffic flows.

A week ago, there were also a number of Chatbox comments about the flashing lights that were installed in Stafford Street as an experiment some years ago. You can see the one that stands beside the steps up to the church to the right.

A council traffic study after they were installed declared them a success – despite reporting more incidents, that is, vehicles meeting head on and one driver having to back up or down the road depending on who best stood their ground.

Sometimes drivers stop and wait in the Square when the lights are flashing causing a mini-jam behind them, only to find nothing approaching up Stafford Street.

Residents in Stafford Street complain because the sensors for the lights take no account of vehicles coming out of their drives or from side roads such as School Lane by the Post Office or Churchfields.

Others argue that the lights do give some warning of approaching traffic and that could help avoid worse jams in the narrow sections of Stafford Street.

What do you think? Should they stay or should they go? Do they help or hinder traffic flows? Are they an eyesore or a necessary addition to the village's traffic signage?

Your thoughts would be welcome, either via the Chatbox or by email to editor@audlem.org

We will then try to pull an article together reflecting your views. Judging by recent work on road resurfacing, it seems the Highways department are regular readers of Audlem Online so your comments could make interesting reading.
