With the news that the A525 was officially removed from the Primary Route Network for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in March, local campaigners have been working to make sure the change of status really does have an impact.

In a move to curb the long-distance trucks that have plagued Audlem for so long – often using what was the most direct Primary Route from the south eastern ferry ports to Holyhead and Ireland – weight limits on the bridges on both the A525 and A529 are now being considered.

The weight limits would not affect local deliveries but would be aimed purely at the long-distance through traffic which should be using alternative Primary Routes to the south and north, the A53 and the A500.

Audlem Parish Council voted unanimously to support weight limits at its meeting on 7th May and discussions are starting with the county highways authorities.

Discussions have also been held with Ordnance Survey to ensure that the A525 has been removed from the Primary Route Network on their maps and, vitally, that the change in status was being passed to the SatNav companies. They have confirmed that this has happened and that new maps will show the A525 as a red A road rather than a green Primary Route.

The Traffic and Transport working group of the Audlem Parish Plan has been considering a range of proposals that could be included the 2010 Plan which will published later this year after being put out to public consultation in the Autumn.
