Thoughts on the cricket season

With the season now over, a few awards also need to be dished out!

First and foremost, congratulations to Qhama Matthews on securing ‘The Duck Cup’ with 6 quackers in the league this year. He received a cheque for a new pair of trainers and was presented with a Magnum of Veuve Clicquot Champagne by his boss at IT Solutions.

The Ginger Grafter, Richard Wilson, was top run scorer with 247 runs at an average of 30.77 including 100 not out. He was presented with his award via video link from his Madrid Apartment and claimed he had already found 34 future Mrs Wilsons who he was ‘nearly’ at first base with.

The pick of the bowlers was Neil Humphries who claimed 39 wickets. Simon Swift also deserves a mention with 28. The pair were, without doubt, instrumental in us finishing a respectable 5th this season. Wicketkeeper Paddy Leese claimed the most catches after an impressive season behind the stumps. 

All eyes are now on next year as the lads look to improve on this year’s final position. A soggy summer meant too many games were lost and the ones that did make it were not condusive to run scoring.

Transfer wise, the rumour mill is already up and running with Brainsy considering a move to Betley. Rothwell has voiced his hopes of turning out for Chumley. Shenton has offered to drive him there.

Crewe man Dave Morris has already committed himself to the side for 2013. No one knows where or when Ollie Burney will be seen next and rumours of an approach for Chris Connelly appear to be nothing more than Twitter trolling. 

A special thank you to everyone who has played this season and particularly to Chris, John and Lynny who put in so much of their spare time to ensure we have a ground fit for purpose each week. It wouldn’t be possible without them.

The squad now have a real nucleus of exciting young players and the 2nd XI too has a number of talented youngsters in their ranks.

There is never a dull moment and it is pleasing to see that people don’t just play cricket, they also enjoy it immensely too (most of the time).
