For some time now, golfers at Brookfield Golf Club have been mystified as to why their balls seem to disappear alongside the stream, which runs to the side of the 17th and 18th fairways.

It seems they are being taken by otters and used to plug holes in their dam! Environmentalists have long said that otters could exist there and prevented the stream becoming a culvert.

Young golfer of the year 22 year old Avril Waulopit, who saw what happened said: "I had driven off from the 17th tee when my ball came to rest close to the out of bound markers near the stream to the right.

"Almost immediately an otter appeared, picked up my ball and ran off with it to his dam! I have looked in the rule book and cannot see who should take the penalty."

Brookfield Golf Club's owners and golf professional are trying to work out how to persuade the otters to desist.
