The Chronicle carries more details on the recent Healthcare Commission report on Leighton Hospital. The report says that the higher than average mortality rate was a cause for concern as well as the 'unacceptable levels' of care for for older patients. The report called for an immediate review of mortality rates in recent years and poor clinical outcomes. It called for greater priority to be given to the care of older patients and those suffering terminal illnesses.

Concerns were also expressed about the failure to meet the target of seeing 98% of casualty patients within four hours and failing to meet the target for dealing with day case patients and those waiting more than the maximum nine months for surgery. Leighton did, however, meet six of the eight targets set by the independent Healthcare Commission. The hospital was downgraded last summer from 2 stars to one star. It did not fare well against the Countess of Chester Hospital, with the maximum 3 stars, and University Hospital of North Staffs with 2 stars.
