AS drivers on the A525 and A529 and regular Chatbox readers will be aware, there has been a flurry of road mending over the past couple of days.

We understand that work on the nasty potholes that have emerged on the notorious Hatherton bends have been added to the programme. While most people seem to think bad driving is the cause of the majority of accidents on that stretch, potholes that cause drivers to swerve cannot help.

Peter Oxley's hard work identifying and reporting large numbers of defects seems to be having an immediate impact – see his two articles this week on AudlemOnline. We know that others have been working hard behind the scenes too.

The more defects that are reported the better, not only in getting the repairs done, but in helping drivers unfortunate enough to have their tyres or wheels damaged to get compensation from Cheshire East.

It is also vital for cyclists as we approach better weather when many more will be on the road. A pothole that can be nasty for a car can be far more dangerous for a cyclist either by hitting it and going over the handlebars or swerving to miss the hole just as a vehicle is passing by.

Of course, the only real answer is for the roads to be properly repaired as in days past – not top dressing or patching but proper resurfacing. We are told on good authority, for example, that Cheshire Street from the Square to Broadways was to have been planed and then properly resurfaced about five years ago. Yet it simply has not happened. Why not? If it needed that work then, it needs it even more now.

Please keep sending in comments as they do seem to have an impact, and most importantly, please report the defects. As well as Cheshire East's own website the following site is very useful: www.fixmystreet.com
