The Secretary of State for Health, Patricia Hewitt, has named eighteen NHS trusts with the most intractable financial problems. They were named and shamed in a tightening of her policy of zero tolerance of deficits.

The Cheshire West Primary Care trust, which covers Audlem and the Medical practice, had the sixth worst record in the country with a deficit of £15 million or 7% of its turnover. Ms Hewitt said these trusts were facing such big financial problems that "even the best management would need additional support to turn the situation around." The Government plans to send in teams of accountants to help – so that should cure everything!
