Cheshire's Ancient Parishes – History Society Talk by Tony Bostock, Sept. 21st
Tony Bostock is well known in the county as the recently retired chair of Cheshire Local History Association and author of a recent book on medieval effigies.
Last Thursday he delivered an excellent talk to Audlem History Society on a selection of our medieval churches full of fascinating features for the discerning visitor. There is a wealth of fine churches a short distance away – Acton, Barthomley and Bunbury among them – and Tony's pictures and commentary showed the significant historical artefacts to be discovered.
Sacred and secular rubbed shoulders, for instance Acton's churchyard memorial to Albert Hornby (see picture), who played cricket for Lancashire and England in Victorian times. The talk combined depth of knowledge, a keen enthusiasm and humorous asides much appreciated by the audience.
