Cheshire East's parent partnership service is looking to recruit more volunteers to help families whose children have special educational needs (SEN).

An Independent Parental Supporter (IPS) can help parents by providing information and offering guidance about their child's education and they can also act in liaison with teachers and other professionals.

However, they do not make decisions for the parent – the aim is to provide an impartial source of independent advice and support.

Volunteers can come from a wide range of backgrounds and the only criteria are that the person wants to help people, has an interest in SEN and has some time to spare.

Full training is provided, free of charge, and applicants will gain an Open College Network qualification upon completion of the course.

The course covers SEN procedures and processes and it will also teach valuable communication skills. The first course was very successful and there is now a team of 10 parental supporters who are working effectively with a number of families in Cheshire East.

A pre-course session is being held on Wednesday, April 25, at Macclesfield Town Hall from 10.30am-12.30pm. This will give more information about the course and allow people to speak to the Parent Partnership team as well as existing volunteers.
