'Giant Wind Farm' at Little Heath

Following repeated applications to build up to 120 affordable homes at Little Heath on the boundary of Audlem, Gladman Developments Ltd have lodged a further option to build a wind farm on the green belt land, should they fail in their initial attempt at developing the area for housing.

Ten wind turbines measuring 76 metres in height have been pencilled in to be erected on the pastures and positioned in order to exploit the westerly winds that flow across from the Welsh border.

Justin Case, head of contingency at Gladman, has come up with this plan as a last ditch attempt at securing fruitful funds for the speculative developer who has invested so much in the Little Heath proposal. He states that if the people of Audlem can't agree on affordable houses, then he's certain they'll succumb to the notion of affordable energy.

Part of the brainwave is to transport the wind turbines in their 'knocked down' state by utilising the canal system from Ellesmere Port along the Shropshire Union Canal as far as Overwater Marina, where a new lifting bay would be built on the towpath side of the canal in order to relieve the specially built 72 foot narrowboats of their cargo.

From here, the structures would be transported across the fields on a newly laid road surface up to Little Heath. Mr Case believes that in delivering the wind turbines this way, the limited access roads towards Audlem would be relieved of any potential traffic problems and in doing so, further enhance Gladman's application without the hindrance of local objections.

Ivor Gudden, regional director of the Canal and River Trust, has pledged his support for the scheme as he sees the advent of regular commercial traffic along this famous waterway as not only beneficial to the trust, but that of the local economy in Audlem.

The Parish Council have declined to comment on this latest application and await further advice from energy secretary Ed Davey.
