First ADAPTability success

Visitors from near and far came along to sample the delights of ADAPTability yesterday. The event was hosted by ADAPT, (Audlem and District Acting Positively for Transition), and offered a range of activities for the whole family.

ADAPT members take the view that local action is necessary to face the challenges ahead and promotes Local Food, Local Shops and Services, and Greener Energy Use as a means of making the transition to a lower carbon lifestyle. ADAPTability showed how enjoyable and money saving or making these changes could be.

Local produceA range of local produce was for sale with home baked cakes and biscuits, jams and chutneys, garden fresh vegetables and delicious free range eggs to be taken home and enjoyed. DAHLIA, the Allotment Society was in attendance and David the Master Composter was on hand to advise on making the perfect compost for all those veggies and flowers.

Judith from Reaseheath College explained the wonderful range of courses on offer and encouraged people to come to their Apple Festival on 18th and 19th October. Two fine hens had brought Bob, Helen and Laura along to show how you could have a supply of wholesome eggs and great entertainment.

CraftsLocal craftspeople shared their skills and visitors watched wool spinning and had a go at making jewellery from recycled paper. Handmade gifts and kits to make things at home were on sale. Bargains could be had at the book stall along with sharing clever ideas for re-using and recycling.

Green Shoots awardChildren took away a pack of puzzles and art activities on environmental themes. Greville from the Audlem Wildlife and Ecology Group provided information on the work of this new village group and organised a children's competition based on local wildlife with a prize for the winner. Local girl, Holly, was presented with the first Green Shoots Award for her mini-enterprise in local food.

Energy savingThere was a whole range of information and advice on energy saving and renewable technologies and free eco equipment to use at home. ADAPT members were busy chatting to visitors and explaining the reasons why we should all try to be that bit more green.

It was a hugely enjoyable day for both visitors and ADAPT members. ADAPT meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at the Baptist Chapel. We shall not be resting on our laurels and will spend the meeting next week reviewing how much progress we have made in our first year and looking forward to more exciting activities in 2011.
