Audlem FC’s home league match took place yesterday versus Nomans Heath of Malpas.

We had a very frustrating start as at the set kick off time of 11.00am, both teams lined up and were ready – but no Referee!

Frantic calls brought the promise of “I am on my way” from one Darren Barnes but he never showed – so, at 11.30am, and with the agreement of both sides, we kicked off with our Geoff Stretch as ref.

Two good, and more evenly matched sides than in previous weeks, played in a very biting cross wind with the first leaves of Autumn falling around us – a manly game with fair tackling.

The first goal – an own goal by Jeff Roots – gave Nomans Heath a start but then a goal by Kev Mort, our captain, saw AFC levelling the score, followed by a penalty shot, struck by our Kev Rogers but saved by Nomans goalie, Phil Rogers!

A  superb flick across by Alan Brindley  gave  Kev Mort the chance to strike again – it was a beauty. 2-1 for us at half time.

The second half brought us a new referee in the person of young Jake McHugh (he is taking a course in refereeing).

We played very well and were camped in the opponent's half for most of the time and a great strike by Jeff Roots made it 3-1, and then a beauty by substitute Phil Cunningham gave us a great lead of 4-1.

Our first league win ever! Great game. Good team work. Clean play. No serous injuries. And followed by the excellent chip butties provided by our major sponsor Allan at the Lord Combermere, where we also entertained out opponents.

Our next game is Alsager AFC on the 30thSeptember, away.
