Council Tax Benefit is Changing

The Government is planning to abolish the current Council Tax Benefit scheme and has asked each Council, across the Country, to create its own local scheme to replace it from April 2013.

Each Council is required to make a 10% saving in Council Tax Support this year which means that Cheshire East Council will be paying out over £20 million through its new local scheme – recognising the financial pressures Cheshire East is facing.

We are committed to the residents of Cheshire East and want you to have your say in the creation of the new scheme as this will affect you.

What this means to you?

It is important to note that rules for pensioners will not change under the new scheme, so their entitlement to benefit will not be affected. However those who are of working age and applying for Council Tax Support are likely to have to pay more towards their Council Tax than under the current Council Tax Benefit scheme.

From April 2013, you will also be able to ask to spread your Council Tax payments over 12 months instead of 10 months.T

Take part in the consultation

The Consultation will continue until the 21st October 2012 so that you can put your views forward on what you think the new scheme should look like. You can have your say using one of the following methods.

Have your say

It is very important that you let us know what you think, as these changes may affect how much Council Tax you pay, the levels of service you receive or how much support you get.
