Local MP Stephen O'Brien has said farmers need a fair deal. He was visiting local cheese makers Joseph Heler's and discussed the pressures facing the dairy industry with directors Michael and Joseph Heler. The MP spent two hours at the factory and said that cheese making plays an important role in the local economy with its strong ties with the Cheshire dairy industry.

Audlem and district was, until a few years ago, an important area for Farmhouse cheese making. But, as recently retired NFU official and Audlem resident Peter Morgan wrote so eloquently in an article on www.audlem.org last September: "These were the days when the Health Stazi were all safely locked behind a wall in East Germany and the legal profession was content with the occasional property conveyance and a weekly Rotary lunch!". Increasing regulation has resulted in local cheese making now being restricted to a few larger manufacturers such as Heler's.
